Activists from across the Latin American and Caribbean region, among whom are l * s Institute participants "Strategies against religious fundamentalism" held in Brazil in 2008, we received with deep sadness, anger and helplessness of the assassination of our colleague Walter Trochez, human rights defender and activist for LGBTI people at the hands of the coup regime installed force in Honduras since 28 June.

condemn such actions, condemn both bloodshed and demand justice, as well as non-recognition of the elections held on November 29 before a "theater" and ward democratic coup.


The December 13, 2009, unknown persons fired from a moving car against Walter Trochez, 27-year-old gay activist for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) , who died later at a hospital in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

His is one of 17 known murders committed against individuals LGBT people in Honduras since the civil-military coup that overthrew the democratically elected government on 28 June 2009.

Before his assassination, Walter faced abuse by his political activism and human rights and sexual orientation. On July 20, 2009, was detained by authorities for participating in a peaceful sit in Congress. During his detention he was severely beaten and humiliated because of their sexual orientation.

On December 4, was abducted and beaten by four masked men who intercepted him in an unmarked gray van, which according to other activists belonging to suspect unit of the police investigation (DNIC). He was able to escape and report the matter before his assassination.

* s We are deeply saddened by the death of Walter Trochez, we send our condolences to his family, friends, friends and all the brave people who defend human rights in Honduras and we urge all individuals, activists, feminists, miembrxs resistance, etc., to commit ourselves to safeguarding the democratic order for all the comrades and a recognition that Comrade Walter was killed to defend him.
